Omar Apollo Drops Luca Guadagnino-Directed ‘Te Maldigo’ Video: WATCH

Omar Apollo is a sad boy in Mexico City in the new video for “Te Maldigo.” On Thursday, the Mexican American heartthrob released the Luca Guadagnino-directed music video for the track, which translates to “I Curse You,” from the upcoming film, Queer.

The video captures Apollo singing the heartbreak track in a dimly lit bar, surrounded by folks performing interpretive dance to the lyrics. “I never heard an ‘I love you’/I always believed/That you would make me happy,” he sings in Spanish. “It can’t be/If you don’t love me.”

The new song arrives just days before Queer is set to be released on Nov. 27. Apollo revealed in an interview in September that he filmed a sex scene with Daniel Craig for the movie.

“I had to get on the soup diet. Luca did not tell me to lose weight, but when you’re about to have a sex scene with Daniel Craig, you’re like, ‘Oh, dude, I can’t be looking off,’” Apollo told Queer protagonist Drew Starkey for Interview Magazine. “I was at 200 pounds because I’m six-five.”

“It’s around where I should be, honestly. But I got down to 181 when the movie came. I lost 20 pounds because I read in the script that my character had a flat brown stomach,” he added. “I was like, ‘Damn, I’m actually not flat right now.’ I had to get it together, and I was on tour with SZA. Luckily, I didn’t have that many lines.”

Starkey described Apollo and Craig’s scene as “so good” and “very sensual.” Apollo also told People that he tried to “emulate that feeling” of filming music videos while making the movie.

Queer is based on the 1985 novel by William Burroughs. The film is set in Mexico City in the Forties and follows Lee (Craig) as he lives with American college students and works part-time jobs following World War II. He then falls for a drug-addicted Navy serviceman played by Starkey, who gives in to Craig’s advances.

Apollo, whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico before he was born, sings in Spanish on many of his projects, including Apolonio‘s “Dos Uno Nueve,” Ivory‘s “En El Olvido,” and God Said No‘s “Empty.” He also joined C. Tangana on “Te Olvidaste” and released a one-off single, “Frío,” in 2019.
