Barbra Streisand to Miss Cannes Closing Ceremony Due to Knee Injury

Actress-singer, who has never appeared at the long-running film festival, was set to receive an Honorary Palme dâor
Barbra Streisand wonât attend this yearâs Cannes Film Festival â where she was set to receive an Honorary Palme dâor â after sustaining a knee injury.
The actress-singer was scheduled to receive the award during the film festivalâs closing ceremony on May 23. However, Cannes organizers announced Sunday they have âjust been informed that Ms. Barbra Streisand will be unable to attend the ceremony.â
âOn the advice of my doctors, as I continue recovering from a knee injury, I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year,â Streisand said in a statement. âBut I am deeply honored to receive the Honorary Palme dâor and had so been looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition.â
Streisand continued, âI was also very much looking forward to spending time with colleagues whom I so admire â and, of course, returning to France, a place I have always loved. While I regret that I canât be there in person, I want to extend my warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year. My heartfelt thanks to the Festival, and to everyone who continues to support and champion the art of cinema.â
The Cannes closing ceremony on May 23 will still include a tribute to Streisand despite her absence; Streisand has never appeared at the iconic film festival, and the closing ceremony would have marked her Cannes debut.
âA global star, Barbra Streisand is above all an artist, initiating projects that reflect who she is, that are her own and that she shares with the whole world,â Cannes festival director Thierry FrĂŠmaux said in a statement earlier this year. âShe is the legendary synthesis between Broadway and Hollywood, between the music hall stage and the big screen. Hearing her sing and seeing her perform are part of our best years.â
Along with Streisand, actor John Travolta and director Peter Jackson also received Honorary Palme dâOr awards at this yearâs Cannes Film Festival.
